6 monyhs i've been going wishy washy over going turbo. missed the great group buy w/clutch etc. etc. Now another group buy is temting me......but, I am real worried about a disaster. $2,800 seems great for all the power. how much more would i need to spend on the other necesary stuff? gauges. vafc/ what else?
And mostly-try to convince me i wont destroy my engine!
I go back and forth between NA and turbo because my motor has 82,000 miles on it. money towards NA would be money toward the motor. turbo seems the oposite-money that hurts motor. what can you all suggest. wisdom is much needed.
What would I need to spend to quiet my fears if i went turbo? what would i have to do/
    Thanks

Tuning, tuning, tuning. A properly tuned, moderatly boosted, FI motor should be just as reliable as yours is now. I'm waiting for better and more affordable engine management to be available before I go FI again. I had a bad experience with my D16 and a JRSC, probably due to poor tuning and engine management.

    Hope this helps.

    blowncivic,

"better and more affordable engine management "

Are you waiting for specific products/companies? If so, which? TOO mentioned something pretty vague to that effect a few weeks ago. Just wondering if I am out of the loop on some upcoming stuff...

No, nothing specific, but I want full, automated, no-maintenance, engine management before I go FI again. I'm totally sick of the giant mess of piggy-back devices to control timing, fuel pressure, spark, knock control, etc...

I like the Hondata system (except for the EEPROM setup), and ZDYNE, but the prices just aren't quite where I want them yet. I don't like any piggy-back ECU configurations at all, such as the PMS.

I want to maintain factory sensors, wiring, ECU location, and some ignition components such as the distributor. I'd hate to purchase the Hondata setup now and have them develop and switch to a tune-on-the-fly memory configuration right after I get mine.

Do yourself a favor and get a J&S Safeguard. Over on clubsi, there have probably been about 10 blown up turbos in the last 2 months and not a single guy was running a J&S. One guy rebuilt his motor and went out and blew it up again within the first hour! Crazy!

Don't get me wrong, the J&S will definitely not make tuning a moot point. You will still need to tune that baby to make it run right. The new J&S Ultra has features that allow you to tune your motor, but more importantly the J&S will protect you from destroying that motor until you get it right and it will save you from problems in the future that might cause your to suddenly run lean (cracked manifold, bad gas, dying fuel pump, extreme temperature, oil leaking into the intake (ask SiRacer on www.clubsi.com about this...it killed his turbo motor), etc, etc.) In a boosted motor, detonation kills and it kills fast.
